Unseen 2023 Movie Spoilers | Ending Explained | Review Recap
Today I am going to recap the recently released Blumhouse horror thriller movie called Unseen. We see a sad-looking depressed lady Emily outside a center, she dials a number but nobody answers it. It was supposed to be the number of that center but turned out to be the number of Emily. A low-vision doctor who was currently held captive by her ex-boyfriend Charlie. Sam entered a gas station where she was working as a cashier. Her boss Issac was always rude to her.
Emily woke up due to the ringing of her phone where her hands and legs were tied up. Charlie took the dumping way too seriously. He was dumped by his parents as well who were rich privileged old money, English people. Charlie blamed Emily as an opportunistic lady as she dumped him right after his parents dumped him. Charlie was determined to murder Emily in a gruesome way, he choked her to the tipping point. He was enjoying this. Emily panicked from all this as she was visibly impaired. She had a very high number, without her glass she can't see a thing. Being a doctor first she tried relaxing and calming down Charlie. She convinced him to return her glass so that she can see him. She acted as if she was sorry. Charlie handed her glass back and thought they could work it out. But Emily attacked Charlie on his head as soon as she had her glasses on. Later by jumping like a frog she grabbed a knife and cut her leg ties. Before she could untie her hands Charlie attacked her from behind and a fight broke out. During all this Emily lost her glasses again but she managed to injure Charlie.
In a rage, she hit him repeatedly on his head with a glass jar which shattered and caused Carlie to bleed out. Charlie was knocked out due to this but Sam too lost her glasses. She accidentally stepped on it. Emily in a hurry grabbed her mobile and ran for her life. She was in a cabin in the middle of the woods, a perfect spot for illicit activities.
At Sam's gas station, Carol walked in to demand a full refund. Even though she had wrongly pumped her gas yet she wanted a full refund. Carol was a bullying type of lady who seemed to be a con artist. She seemed to sense Carol's sad yet depressed behavior. She wanted to exploit it. She threatened to report this gas station to the better business bureau as if she had not got her refund. This place was short on many regulations. Sam was shocked by this and without thinking much she agreed to refund her. For details, she took Carol's card.
In the woods, Emily dials 911 and explains her situation. She had switched off her location setting long ago precisely to stop Charlie from tracking her down. 911 operator tries her best to help, without location tracking it would take at least an hour to locate her from her network provider's setting. Emily didn't have an hour she needed someone to guide her through the video call as she couldn't see anything without her glasses. She asked the operator to call her back via video call but the operator refused. She said it's against the policy to use personal mobile for professional situations. Emily was furious, her life was on the thread before she could rant her gut out she stumbled. Due to this call got disconnected. Back at the cabin, Charlie woke up, he dressed up himself and was ready for a kill.
Emily dials the last number from her mobile thinking it's 9111 but to her surprise, it goes to Sam at the gas station. She explains her situation to Sam and asked her to call her on a video call. Sam was not sure, she too says calling 911 was the best shot. Emilly literally begs Sam for help hence Sam agrees. Sam dials Emily on a video call and gives directions seeing through the phone's camera. Emily was somewhere in Michigan while Sam was in Florida. Emily walks a mile from her position with Sam's help and rests near a tree.
Sam watched a video of a Russian YouTuber who explains how to untie zip ties easily. She explains this to Emily and Emily does the same. She lifts her hand up in the air, brings it down on knees with a force, which breaks the tie. Emily screams hard as this caused a cut on her wrist. Quickly she stopped the bleeding with her bandana but unfortunately for her Charlie heard her scream.
At the gas station, a farmer cum hiker walked in to buy something. Sam thought this guy might help Emily to navigate. She asked him what would he do if he ever gets lost in the woods. The guys said he would find a river or stream to hide as with water one can sustain many days. From the internet, Sam found out that following a bird's flock could lead you to water. Emily knew which direction the birds were flying as she was hearing them all along. She aligned her direction with that and started walking. Sam and Emily talked almost about everything. Sam felt nice for the first time in many days as someone was listening to her. Unfortunately, Sam's mobile's battery was running down and her charging point got locked.
As she tried to unlock it with a knife, she cut herself. At the same time, the Frezy machine at the station started to malfunction and Emily was at the edge of a small cliff. She fell from there as Sam was busy doing other stuff. Quickly she pulled herself up, dressed her hand, and started navigating again for Emily. Emily was ok though, she quickly got up and as soon as she started heading out Sam saw Charlie on the cliff. she warned Emily which caused her to hide beneath the cliff. This time Charlie had brought his car which was parked right beside him. As he went away from it to search for Emily, Emily had a crazy idea. She wanted to drive away in that car with Sam as GPS. Sam thought this as nuts as the idea of a near-blind person driving a car was insane. Emily thought about it, it was the easiest way out.
She quickly ran towards the car, hopped into it, placed the mobile on the dashboard, and ignited the engine. Hearing the sound of his car Charlie came back. Emily got another bad idea of running over Charlie as this was a do-or-die situation. Sam was trying hard to talk her out of this but a scared woman was in no mood to listen to any logic. Emily quickly ran the car directly into Charlie and knocked him over. She lost control soon after this as she jammed the car right into the tree. She was ok. Sam asked her to grab a piece of mirror which got shattered during this process for self-protection. Emily did that. She saw Charlie lying unconscious, in her rage she wanted to kill him in cold blood. Her emotions were raging fast. Sam being a depressed lady gave Emily hope, talked her out of it, and promised her that she will be ok. Emily understood this as she walked away listening to Sam.
Sam's mobile's battery was running out and it could not be charged. Sam wrote down Emily's number. At the same time, Carol once again walked into the station as she had left her card here. This time Sam took the initiative and grabbed her phone to call Emily. She locked herself in a glass room as Carol started banging on the door for the phone. She threatened Sam with a gun but still, Sam didn't come out. She stood her ground. Back in the woods Charlie once again woke up and he finally caught Emily. These two argued again, and Emily tried to reason it with Charlie. She pointed out his mistakes, weakness, and shortcomings. Charlie was in no mood to listen, he again tried to strangle Emily. Emily was standing at the edge of a deep cliff due to Chharlie's attack she slipped and fell into the river.
Now it's more than an hour and night still 911 was not in the sight. Sam was trying to call Emily from Carol's phone but her last two numbers got erased. She tried some permutation and finally got it. Emily was still alive, she made it to shore but was too weak.
She had lost all hope, Sam tried her best to get her up but Emily had given up. She asked Sam to call her mom as she wanted to talk with her one last time before dying. Sam called her from the store's landline, Emily was naturally horrified listening to all this. Emily was estranged from her mom yet her mom was helping her. With the persuasion of Sam and Emily's mom Emily finally agreed to get up to head out.
At Sam's station, Carol brought her boyfriend who had an assault rifle. they broke in, called the cops, and started banging on the cabin in which Sam was hiding. Soon Issac too arrived here, he too started aggressively shouting at Sam to come out. But Sam was determined to help Emily who by this time moved into a barn. Charlie soon followed her here. Finally, Emilly sneakily attacked him with the mirror and knocked him for good. By this time police arrived at Sam's station as she explained everything to them. Finally, she came out. Through all this, she gained courage and confidence. she visibly abused Carol for what she was.
Emily and Sam became good friends, Sam decides to back to school. As Sam threw the card on which Emily's number was written we come to know about the center which we saw in the first scene. It was a suicide helpline center, Sam was so depressed that she needed help. The film's premise is great but the screenplay has a lot of shortcomings. It could have been better, the movie seemed comedic in many instances rather than a thriller. Anyway is not bad, but it's not good either, it's an average film.
