The Curse Of Agatha Earnshaw  | Ending Explained | Movie Spoiler | Movie Recap

The film begins with a short explanation where some villagers are said to have migrated from Ireland to America in 1873. Here they have created their own exclusive community. The world wars happened, the scientific knowledge grew, but villagers stuck to their traditional religious way of life. Like the modern-day Amish community. In 1956 a pandemic called Eclipse started. Their farms started losing their fertility. Pets started dying of disease. The slow, progressive drought started. Except for the farm of one woman named Agatha Earnshaw, everyone's fields were becoming barren. The villagers thought witchcraft was the reason for Agatha's prosperity, they believed her to be a witch, hence they kicked her out of the village. For many years she was living alone with their 17-year-old daughter, Audrey. Agatha gave birth to Audrey during the eclipse, and she always protected her from the villagers. The film is presented in four chapters. One incantation. Two descent. Three Fallout. Four Spring. These four chapters show Audrey's evolution.

Now the year was 1973. A desperate villager, Mr Lochlan, comes to Agatha to trade a few items. He and his family had nothing to eat. He wanted to trade food with Agatha, but Agatha refuses, says his family is not her responsibility. She sends him empty handed. Audrey was watching all this secretly, she asked Agatha why she didn't help him. He was desperate. Here Agatha lies and says the villagers are not good, they are mean, cruel, they steal daughters from their mothers. That's why we should always stay away from them. Agatha was highly possessive of Audrey over here. After some time, Agatha was walking across the village with some food items. She hid Audrey in her cart. A funeral was going on in the village. The village's head priest, Seamus Dwyer's grandson Liam, died. The Priest Dwyer was comforting his son Colm and daughter-in-law Bridget. He says to them that you may feel that this pain will never end, this darkness will never end, but we should not lose hope. After darkness comes the light of hope. We have to have faith in God. Everything will be okay. Now Colm saw Agatha and her food cart, which made him furious. He abuses her as his son died of poor nutrition. He in anger hits her and asks why God is kind to you. We are all deeply devoted to him, yet we are suffering. Everyone knows who you are devoted to. Now all the hungry villagers start looting Agatha's food and start abusing her. The Priest Dwyer calms the situation and gives Agatha her food items back, he lets her go from there. Audrey saw all this sitting in the cart, she got angry.

Here Agatha and many other ladies like her used to practise witchcraft. They had a club. Audrey was their prime witch, but her powers were still in a development stage. These people were training her for a mission which Agatha did not like. She wanted to keep Audrey like her daughter. Audrey now shares the incident with everyone. A witch gives the idea of cursing Colm. For this, Audrey had to bring a few things belonging to Colm's son Liam.

Agatha and Audrey were on their way back home when Audrey started with Agatha arguing about Colm. She felt her mom's insult as her own, she wanted to avenge that, she was keen on cursing Colm. Just then another villager, Bernard, arrives there. He saw Audrey. He was shocked as no one knew that Agatha had a daughter. Agatha panics and offers all her food items as a bribe to Mr. Bernard so that he can keep it a secret. Mr Bernard was in horror, he agreed with some items. But Agatha was not sure that he would keep it a secret, she got tensed. The secret of 17 years was about to open now. Audrey takes advantage of this opportunity and runs away from there. Alas, typical teenagers.

Audrey was waiting outside Colm's house. She pretended to fall unconscious in front of him while he was walking to his house after drinking. Seeing her in such a condition, he takes her to his house. Here we see the message of the first chapter incantation. After some time, Audrey woke up, and she started talking with Colm. She asked him about his wife, Bridget. Colm was drunk, he says after Liam, Bridget is his everything. Here Audrey only tells her name to hi, she doesn't tell him who she is or where she has come from. As Colm went away to check on Bridget, Audrey picked a toy belonging to Liam. Later, she went to the adjacent farm, she buried that toy there and started cursing Bridget. We see that her eyes had turned white, meaning she was not human. Late at night we see Bridget arriving at this spot, suddenly she starts eating soil there. She was clearly in a state of possession. Here Colm stops her and takes her back home.

The next morning, Audrey returns to her house, where Agatha angrily scolds her. Audrey, like a typical teenager, was leaving Agatha's grip. The next morning Bridget vomits blood. She was a week. Her behavior had dramatic changes. Colm calls the doctor, who checks Bridget and says that she is pregnant. That's why there are such mood swings. Colm and Bridget were not expecting this as they had lost their son just yesterday. At Agatha's house, Audrey says whatever you did all these years was for my protection, but now you have to have faith in me. I am ready. Agatha replies by saying you will be ready only when you understand the meaning of sacrifice. I have made many sacrifices for you.

Now Mr Lochlan kills his horse for his family and takes its meat as food. He was desperate. Now Chapter Two Decent begins. The epidemic in the village was growing, animals were dying of unknown diseases, the fruits were rotting, Bernard, who was a veterinarian, thought all this was unnatural. After seeing Audrey, his mental condition worsened, he became agitated and anxious. Now seeing this, his wife Deirdre asks for help from Priest Dwyer. Bernard tells Dwyer that I have recently seen Agatha Earnshaw’s daughter, she was a very beautiful creature. After seeing her, an emptiness has grabbed my mind, a darkness which is making me nervous. Years ago, when Claudia Baron spread rumours that Agatha had a daughter, no one believed her, and eventually she died of mental illness. I think the same is happening with me. Dwyer consoles him and says Agatha has no daughter. She herself told me.

Later Bernard goes to Mr Lochlan's house to check on his horse where his wife and child were lying dead. Mr Lochlan had mixed poison in horse meat. Bernad was horrified seeing this. Next we see him at a church gathering, where his belief in faith was blown away. In anguish he says to the priest Dwyer that your teachings are useless, there is a famine outside, people are dying of hunger, everything is rotting. He now takes out his gun and says I saw her. There was comfort in her eyes which showed me your level. Now he commits suicide by shooting himself in front of everyone. He had lost it completely. Deirdre started screaming and crying in disbelief.

At Agatha's house, Audrey asks her what her legacy is. Agatha says the sacrifice could be someone's legacy, but for me, you are my legacy. People will remember me for you. Audrey further asks, will you sacrifice me? Agatha was surprised and taken back. Just then, Mr Lochlan arrives at Agatha's house, he blames Agatha for the death of his family. He attacks her and begins to kill her by confronting her. But then Audrey who was hiding in the closet barges out, attacks him from behind and kills him. Agatha was shocked by this. Her sweet little daughter has now become a murderer. There is a little verbal fighting between the two. Agatha says I thought I might be a good mother, but I was wrong. They both dispose Mr Lochlan's body.

Bridget's health was deteriorating due to Audrey's curse, she was still in Liam's grief. Right now she didn't want a pregnancy, she wanted an abortion. Which was strictly prohibited in this uber religious community. Colm gets furious after hearing the name of abortion. Bridget kills their last living sheep in their grief. Meaning Audrey's curse was also worsening her mental health. She was doing drastic things which she would not have done.

Deirdre confronts the Priest Dwyer, asks him if Bernard had an affair. As after meeting him, his health got worse, he must have confessed something to him. She wanted an investigation from the city police. The Priest Dwyer explains Bernad's doubt about Agatha. Here Deirdre asks priest Dwyer to verify this story. When Dwyer meets Agatha, she again tells him that she has no daughter, these are all rumours.

Colm was shocked to see Bridget with a dead sheep, he burned that sheep. Agatha plans to leave this village with this Audrey as a final attempt, but Audrey was adamant. She breaks her hidden box in the horse cart. She didn't want to go anywhere, but was keen to face all the villagers. She had moved away from Agatha's iron grip. Rebellious teens, I must say.

At Colm's house, Bridget now tries to abort himself, but she's unsuccessful. She hurt herself. Colm stops her further and tries to convert her mind. Later on, Bridget's condition worsens, black spots appear everywhere on her body, she gets strong fevers. Even the doctor here does not understand what is happening. And he was not a modern doctor but a community doctor who used to treat in the traditional way. At night, Agatha gave up her hope and quietly started leaving this village all alone. Hearing the news of Bridget, the Priest Dwyer comes to meet his son. He shares rumors related to Agatha's daughter with Colm. Where Colm also shares his encounter with Audrey. Just then it hits Colm, Bridget's condition got worse from the night Audrey was here. He now starts to believe Agatha's witchcraft role in Bridget's declining health.

On the other hand, Deirdre herself goes to investigate at Agatha's house with Bernard's gun. She finds the dead Mr Lochlan's body there. She was spooked.

Later, Audrey and Priest Dwyer meet outside Colm's house. Priest Dwyer sees her in shock and asks who you are. What have you done to my daughter-in-law? After meeting you, one of my followers committed suicide? Here Audrey speaks nothing, she just keeps staring at Dwyer. In the next scene we see a different reality, Audrey was in an old church-like building where many souls were there. Audrey was their leader. Here we see Dwyer’s soul, Audrey convinces him, possess him and incorporates his soul into her cult. In reality, whenever someone saw Audrey, they would feel a sense of darkness, emptiness and a sense of losing one self to someone else. Audrey used to capture their soul by filling him with her sad emotion. That's why Bernard's mental condition started deteriorating. Here Deirdre sneakily saw the meeting of Dwyer and Audrey. The rest of the Witches from the Witchcraft group caught Agatha outside the village and started bringing her to Audrey.

Now at Colm's house, Bridget dies of ill health. The Priest Dwyer was completely under Audrey's control. He was forgetting Christian prayers. Deirdre shows Dwyer the ring of Mr Lochlan and says he was killed by Agatha and her daughter. He demands answers from Dwyer as she saw him with Audrey. Just then we see Dwyer transforming into Bernard. Bernard was frustrated, agitated, he shouts at Deirdre and asks her to kill him. Panicked Deirdre screams for Colm. As Colm runs down, Bernard says Bridget is dead, shoot me, shoot at me. Panic-stricken Deirdre fires in the end. Here Deirdre actually shot at Dwyer thinking him as Bernard. Since Bernard was dead, seeing him like this seemed he was not real. All this was Audrey's trick, she made Deirdre hallucinate. Priest Dwyer was dead here.

Later, Audrey and the rest of the Witches arrive at Colm's house with Agatha. Upon seeing Audrey, Colm attacks her and says I invited you to my house, and you did this to me. Audrey smiles a little and says it was all the result of hitting my mother. In between, Agatha says before me, many witches tried to conceive you, but they failed. I have completed you to term, these people are jealous about it. Audrey thanks Agatha and makes an offer to Colm. He will get everything back in his life, Bridget will be alive, his fields will be fertile only if he makes a deal. Audrey gives Colm a knife and asks him to murder Agatha. Murder is the highest sin in Christianity, hence by doing it he was committing himself to this demonic cult. Agatha pleads with Audrey not to do this, but Audrey gives her a cold shoulder. Colm was curious about Audrey's father, to which Agatha says there is none. I am still a virgin. Colm anyway does the unspeakable act.

Meaning, Audrey was the daughter of the Devil, these witches were Devil worshiper, the Devil sent her child to Earth to increase his influence. Agatha's job was to protect the Devil's Child so that she would grow up to be successful in her mission. Audrey came to the world to spread evil, more like the female version of the Anti-Christ. Over the years, Agatha fell in love with Audrey, she started treating her like her own daughter, keeping her away from her mission. When she failed, she started running from her, leaving everything behind. Audrey sacrificed her because she was a hindrance to her mission. This was Agatha's legacy.

Next we see Bridget getting up, she was alive. Audrey leaves this community and goes to the outside world by taking a lift in a car. Now we see Chapter Four Spring. The colm's field was fertile again. Bridget was in labor where she gave birth to a non-human creature. She and Colm were both horrified. The film ends here. So this was the story of the film The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw. This film is beautiful, its costume set design is amazing. Its story is complicated, there are many sub plots. Like a mother's struggle, a community's struggle for faith during a pandemic, a seventeen-year-old teenager's excitement for freedom. After watching the film for the first time, you may feel emptiness, it is not easy to understand the deepness of the plot.
