Today I will explain a Hulu Original film called Books of Blood. It has a rating of 5.6 out of 10 and is directed by Brandon Braga. The writer of this film is Adam Simon. It is based on the 1984 book series of Books of Blood by author Cleve Barker. There were 6 books in this series which you will find in two volumes nowadays. Many short stories written in these books have already been made into films like Rawhead Rex, Candyman, Quicksilver Highway, The Midnight Meet Train and the 2009 film Book Of Blood. I will tell some interesting facts related to this film at the end, so please watch till the end. This movie is non-linear and has mainly 3 different stories. The timeliness of the stories is also different, which converge at the climax.
The film begins with the voiceover of a lady named Mary who says that everyone will die one day, but sometimes people's death is so shocking that it gets sealed in the collective memory of the rest. There is a place where these dead people write their story. In the first story we see a librarian getting a beating from a guy named Bennet who was a contact killer. Bennet beats the hell out of this librarian for money which he owed, but the poor guy had run out of his options. As a last attempt, he revealed a secret book which was worth millions. Bennet thanks him by slicing his throat. Next Bennett shares this info with his buddy in crime, Steve. He says the book is in a house located in the Revenmoor area. Steve was surprised. He says that area is haunted, something happened there years ago, like Chernobyl. It's abandoned, nobody dares to go there. Bennett was desperate for money, hence he mocked it as a superstition. He locks the house address on the car’s GPS.
Now the name Jenna appears on the screen, written in blood. The second story is about a girl named Jenna who lived in the see-faceing house with her parents.
Apparently, Jenna was a patient of Misophonia. A mental illness where normal sounds like chewing sounds, water dripping sounds, repetitive sounds would trigger an outburst of anger, irritation and immense pain. Her hearing was also above normal, she could hear even the smallest movement.
The doctors had prescribed her medicine which she was no longer taking, as in they were making her inactive and numb. She started listening to white noise on headphones to block the sounds. Jenna had messed something up with a boy in college on which her parents were a little angry. They now decide to send Jenna again to an institution called the form so that she can be treated properly. Jenna overhears their plan and runs away at midnight stealing money from the parents' safe. Jenna takes a ticket to Los Angeles from the bus station. We see a man at the station who was staring at her. Jenna gets scared and runs from there quickly.
After some time, the man follows Jenna and boards the same bus in which Jenna was. Jenna thinks that this guy is stacking her, hence she drops at the next city. It was night time, she booked a home stay to stay. While going there, she narrowly survives a car accident. The driver in the green car was driving fast as he thought there would be no traffic at night time.
Now we meet three new characters at the Home Stay. Ellie and Sam were the owners of the Home Stay. Gavin had come from Australia to stay there for the overnight. Ellie was a retired nurse who now offers tea to Jenna. Jenna and Gavin talk casually, and he gives his number. Now while sleeping in the room, Jenna heard a sound from the wall. Upon checking it, a cockroach comes out of the wall. Jenna gets a dream where she sees that same bus man in front of her see-seeing house. She wakes up in horror and panic where we see that man near her window at this stay home. Jenna thinks this as her hallucination or illusion. Here we observe a strange phenomenon, Jenna was now completely in a catatonic state. Meaning. She was conscious but could not move her body. Her hands and legs were locked.
In the next scene we see Gavin at Jenna's room, it seems he was there with the intention of intimacy. Now Sam and Ellie arrived at Jenna's room too, they grabbed Gavin and took him out. Ellie talks here in a cryptic way and Sam takes Jenna's body measurement. Jenna was looking at all this in horror, but she couldn't do anything due to her catatonic state.
The next morning, Jenna thinks all this as her nightmare. She goes to the coffee shop to have a cup of coffee. There she Whatsapps Gavin, but Gavin does not answer. Here she again sees that man outside the coffee shop, seeing whom she runs agin in panic. The man also starts following her. Jenna now comes back Home Stay where she tells her story of mental illness to Ellie. Ellie allows her to stay there for a few days. Now at night, Jenna again hears some sounds from the wall of the room, this time she finds a secret opening in the wall. There he saw a woman glued to the wall who was like a zombie. Jenna panics, and she gets a text message from Gavin. Jenna urges him to call 911, but no reply comes from Gavin's side. We see Gavin's phone was with Ellie, and she was texting Jenna. Ellie starts banging Jenna's room, she was now pretty sure that Ellie and Sam were dangerous, hence she opened the door, attacked them, and ran away from them. Sam has already locked all the doors and windows of this house. Jenna was trapped here. In a desperate attempt, she enters an opening where she sees many zombies like people who were stuck on the wall. They start attacking her. As soon as Jenna starts running away from there too, Sam catches her. Ellie gives her a sedative injection and ties her to the chair.
She starts narrating her psycho theory, I was a nurse, I treated many patients living on life support with my special painkillers and nutrients. Hospital administration didn't like it. They fired me. When Sam lost his job, my daughter and her husband arrived here to stay with us. Later they were planning to place us in an old age home. They wanted to sell this house. So I used my skills, made them a permanent zombie. Now we all are living happily under one roof. Ellie offers the same treatment to Jenna in order to get rid of her pain.
Last night Ellie gave Jenna and Gavin tea mixed with her medicine, which made Jenna catatonic. Which caused Gavin to wonder around, that's why he was in Jenna's room. These guys already turned him into a zombie. It seemed these two old people had gone mad, and they used to kill everyone who stayed in their home. Now Ellie gives her a catatonic injection in Jenna's eye. Here we see that man who was following Jenna, arriving at this Home Stay. He wasn't an illusion of Jenna, but he was real. He was stocking her.
He narrates a story regarding Jenna. Jenna and this guy’s son, Tony, had some sort of relationship at the institute. Tony was admitted there for depression. When Tony committed suicide there, he was on the phone with Jenna. This guy wanted to ask a few questions about this to Jenna. Jenna heard all this, she was scared. Due to her mental condition, the injection was slow at work. She tries to untie herself.
Ellie offers a cup of tea to this guy as well. When he becomes catatonic, Sam attacks him from behind and kills him. When these two old guys were disposing the body, Jenna freed herself. She crawls out of her chair to the window and jumps from there.
She walks slowly to the car hanger where she sees another dead body whose limbs are shredded to pieces. She tries to run away from this house with Tony’s dad’s car, but for her bad luck, Sam arrives. In fear she hides at the back of the car where Sam drives the car. Ellie was following his car from her car. Sam stops at a big ditch where he dumps that car. The car rapidly starts to dissent, Jenna was shouting and screaming from inside, but the car doesn’t stop. It falls down.
The film’s third story starts now. We see a name Miles. This story is based on two characters, Mary and Simon. Marry here was narrating this story to some rich folks. Marry was a professor who was known for debunking paranormal activities. One day a VCR cassette arrived at Mary’s office. In the video one naked guy was standing in an empty room. Suddenly, darkness spreads in that room, and we see lots of messages written in red color. That nude guy was suffering from pain. Marry was supposed to debunk this video, but she ignores it. That nude guy’s name was Simon. Marry had a son named Miles who was suffering from leukemia.
Marry’s ex-husband was a drug addict, he was not a good dad. Marry stops him from visiting Miles for the last time. A few days later Miles dies, and Mary buried him. Next day Simon pays a visit to Marry and says he is a medium, ghosts are using him to send messages. All the messages on the wall are from the ghosts. He insists on a session from Marry. Marry was not that interested, but she agreed to debunk him.
Marry locks Simon in an empty room. As soon as Simon gave the permission for possession, the darkness spread in that room. Horrible sounds start echoing. Simon again falls down with pain. This time as well there were lots of messages on the wall. One particular message was from Milies who says I am not sleeping, mommy.
Marry was confused and shocked here. She has not seen this kind of paranormal activities before. She takes Simon to the hospital and starts studying his callings. Over the time these two get close and eventually get married. One night during their sleep we see the ghost of Miles who hover around Marry and touches her. In one scene we see the grave of Miles. The date on this gravestone was April 20, 1993. Meaning, this third story was happening in the nineties where the first two stories were happening in 2020.
Here Simon was hired by Marry’s ex-husband to marry her and deceive her. Simon was no medium. He totally faked his show. He paid the security to cut the power exactly at that moment. On the previous day he wrote all those messages on the wall with a chemical called Phenolphthalein. During the session, when darkness spread, Simon spread the wall with an ammonia sprayer. Ammonia is a reacting agent, as soon as it touched with Phenolphthalein, the messages became visible. Simon injected himself with micro doses of penicillin which was allergic to him. It caused him real pain, hence everybody believed in his trick. Actually, he made a perfect trick.
Marry was shocked knowing all this. She starts crying while sitting in Miles's room. Despite having written so much about paranormal fake claims, she became the victim of fraud. Then a message starts being typed in the black board of Miles's room. It says bring him to us. Now Mary sees Miles's ghost sleeping on his bed. The next day Simon starts leaving the house, but Murry stops him by saying that today is the fund-raising dinner, and he can't hold back. Simon was going to get a lot of money from this fund-raising event, so he agreed to his act of medium. But at the party, Marry tricks him and takes him and the rest to Miles's room. Marry says to everyone that today Simon will do a live demonstration.
Simon had no idea of what was happening. Mary locks him in the room by making him nude. Now suddenly we see many ghosts in that room, and they start writing their story one by one on Simon's skin.
Then suddenly the power of the whole area goes off. Marry now pacifies Simon by coming inside the room. All the rich people run away seeing this. Actually, it was the Ravenmoor area in which Mary's house was located. In the beginning, Bennett called this very area as the haunted area. Now we also see Bennett's name written in blood on the screen.
The story goes back to 2020 where Bennett and Steve are driving towards the Ravenmoor area in their green car. It was this green car from which Jenna narrowly escaped. Bennet was driving this. As soon as they reach that haunted area, the cars break down. Here Steve sees his mother's ghost in the back mirror. Steve follows that ghost into a trance-like state and arrives at an abundant church. There, he sits in the position of committing suicide by placing a gun on his neck. Seeing this erratic behavior of Steve, Bennett was shocked, and he tried to convince Steve, but it was too late. Steve commits suicide by shooting himself. Bennett now runs away from this church when he sits in his car, the car starts moving on its own. It drove him to Marry's house.
Marry's house was clean and looked like a new one. Bennett starts looking for the book in this house, and while searching he comes to Miles's room. In Miles's room there was Marry who was old and there was also Simon who was the same as he looked in 1993. Ghosts made him a zombie. Simon was the Book of Dead on which the Ghosts used to come and write their story. In the original 1984 book, Mary made a deal with these Ghosts. Where they used to posses Simon and narrate stories there. Marry, used to publish the. Here, also, Mary might be publishing stories, but it is not specifically mentioned.
Here Marry says to Bennett that you are not the first one to come here in search of that book. For those who came here, their death is already written in that book. Bennett's name gets added on Simon's head. We see many rats rushing towards Bennett to kill him. In order to escape from him, he starts running from the house. As soon as he goes to the garden of the house, he attacks the rats with a knife, instead of killing them, he gets injured. Later, while running in the Injured State, he comes to the same house where Jenna and Gavin stayed. There Sam was busy in handling Gavin's body. He attacks Bennet and kills him. It was this Bennett's body which Jenna saw in the car's hanger. The limbs were shredded.
Now in the next scene we see Jenna in hospital where she apparently survived the accident. The police tell their parents that Tony's father had followed her, and it seemed that he wanted to commit suicide with Jenna. He may have believed that Jenna may be responsible for Tony's death; hence, in despair he might have done this. The police recovered Tony's dad's body from the crash site as Sam placed him at the driver's seat before crashing it. We come to know the back story of Jenna and Tony where two mentally ill patients had a relationship.
Tony was on the roof of a building and Jenna was in her bed room. Jenna calls Tony and tells a lie that she is also on the roof of another building. She says some highly nonsense philosophical things, such as life is a lie, and there is life after death. Tony was a recovering depression patient, he jumps without thinking much. After the car accident, guilt for Jenna was too much. After recovery, she voluntarily goes to the same Home Stay and asks Ellie to end her pain. Sam and Ellie bury her in her room after sealing her ear. Jenna dies there, and her name is also added to the Books Of Blood. The film ends here. So this is the story of the hulu original film Books of Blood. Three different stories are beautifully mixed here. In this you will see suspense horror jump scares and a great plot twist.
The premise of this film is that you cannot run away from your fate. Bennett and Steve were contact killers, and they died due to their greed.Jenna was a mentally ill patient who had come to terms with her failure. She made a mistake and accepted a scary death instead of an easy death. Simon paid the price for his ghost joke. So I hope you enjoyed this video.
