Today I am going to explain and recap a recently released slow-burning horror film called watcher. If you have not subscribed to my channel then please do it. The film opens with a newlywed couple called Julia and Francis. These were moving into Romania, the Dracula's own country. Francis was from here but many years he was settled in the US. He was here as he got transferred on the job. Julia is an American citizen this was her first trip here. On the way to their apartment, a taxi driver complimented her by saying she is beautiful in Romanian. Francis translated this as Julia didn't know Romanian. The apartment owner hands them the keys and they move in. After enjoying themselves they slept. Julia was not getting sleep and she woke up during the night. she started seeing her neighborhood through the window. In the opposite building, we see one guy standing in his house. He too was watching the neighborhood. Julia saw that and ignored it.
The next morning Francis went early for his job and he left a message saying he will be back early. Julia was busy with our household work. she was learning Romanian through Alexa's help. She heard noises from her neighboring flat where a lady was dancing and shouting. In the afternoon she went for a casual walk in the city and enjoyed a coffee in a local cafe. For the next many days, she maintained this routine she was learning Romanian. She was feeling a bit isolated as this place was new, the language was different and she was not able to communicate well with others. Basically, she was getting bored. One night while she was watching through her window she saw that guy again in his house watching the neighborhood. It surprised her. Just answers arrived and took her for a dinner and a walk. While coming back they heard a police siren and saw a group of people around a house. The ambulance was there and a guy was sitting in it. Francis asked what happened to one of the ladies standing there.
She had no idea but it seemed something really bad had happened. The next morning Julia saw this incident in a local news report. They were saying that the police found a women's body in that house. The guy who was sitting in the ambulance saw the body and called the police. The investigation was on. This news rattles Julia a little as that house was very near to hers. She informs Francis about that guy watching her from the opposite building. But Francis dismisses it as nothing. He had invited his friend Simon and his wife for a dinner night tonight. He asked Julia to prepare something delicious for them. Simon and his wife were friendly to Julia. They talked a lot in Romanian hence most of it she didn't get. Simon started talking about the murder which happened yesterday. he said the police had not disclosed it to the public but there is a rumor that the killer this time decapitated his victim's head. Julia asked what he meant by this time, had he done this before. Simon continued, last month there was a murder in the neighboring area where a lady's throat was split wide open. The resemblance is quite certain. The police believe that there is a serial killer roaming around. they are calling him the spider. This whole host of terrible news spokes Julia.
The next day Julia bumps into her neighbor Irina. Irina apologizes to Julia for making loud noises, she asked her to bang on her door and notify her whenever she thought she is making loud noises. Julia with a smile agreed. While on an afternoon walk Julia saw the victim's face in a local newspaper. she Googled her name and got the information in English. There she saw the testimony of another lady. She says the guy barged into my apartment and attacked me from behind. He pinned me down and put his knife on my throat. A pillow was on my face hence I didn't see his face. He sat beside me for an hour and then left. This whole episode traumatized me. I still have nightmares about this. This whole murder news rattled Julia as she was living alone. she felt scared. Later she went to see a movie with English subtitles, to her surprise and shock it turned out to be a horror movie.
While watching it she felt someone was sitting behind her on purpose. even though the whole theatre was nearly empty this guy choose to sit behind her. she turned and saw this guy's face. she thought he might be the same guy who was watching her from his window. Hence she ran from there. Later we see her at a supermarket where at first she tries to buy a cigarette. She was sober for 6 months. this stress was causing her to drift into the rabbit hole once again. Somehow she controlled her emotions and stopped herself from purchasing it. Just then she saw that guy again here at the supermarket. she started running again from there. In a hurry, she dropped all her vegetables and hid behind the door. She sneakily watched that guy who was picking up her vegetables. He too started steering at her. An employee of the supermarket saw Julia and asked her to leave from the back door. He thought she is stealing something. He said something in Romanian that Julia didn't get. She just left from the back door. This started affecting Julia's health, appetite, and sleep cycle. She explained everything to Francis the next day. Both of them went back to the same supermarket.
They requested the fellow to show them the CCTV footage from yesterday. We see in the footage that Julia was running from that guy and she was staring at him. For Francis, it seemed obvious as both of them were steering at each other. Julia took the photo of that guy on her mobile. From next morning Julia started watching that apartment, for that guy. Julia's anxiety and stress levels increased as loneliness made it worse. The late evening she heard the sound of someone banging the main door heavily. As she anxiously opened it there was an old lady who was screaming in panic. she was speaking in Romanian hence Julia understood nothing. Here Irina was passing by she translated it. The old lady said her cat is missing. It used to wander around. Irina joked by saying the cat doesn't like this lady. Later she invited Julia for drinks. These two ladies started chatting over a glass of wine. Just then Irina's ex-boyfriend arrived there and started banging on the door. He was shouting in Romanian to which Irina also shouted and shooed him off. Later she said the guy is not bad, he gets a little bit excited sometimes. She shows a gun gifted by him and says he gave it to me as protection in case. Now it's coming in handy against him. These two talk for an hour or so. Julia came back to her apartment and again this time that guy was there in his house watching. With a little bit of courage, Julia waved to him, and to her surprise, he waved back. This scared the hell out of her, she closed the curtains and locked herself in a room.
When Francis arrive she explained everything to him. He called the police this time and narrated their story. Julia showed that guy's photo. The officer and Francis went to that apartment to confront that. After some time Francis came back to his house, by the look on his face he was not satisfied. That guy has not committed any crime and technically he had done no wrong. Julia's allegations of stalking her were merely coincidental. Francis tried to console Julia as he thought she is imagining things. This new country, new language was making her stressed. Julia was pleading that whatever she saw is real and she wanted Francis to believe her. These two fight a little over this.
The next day on her walk Julia saw that guy near her cafe and decided to follow him. she followed him everywhere. That guy entered an underground stripper club. He was working there as a cleaner. Julia met Irina there when she was watching him. Irina was working here. She took Julia to a side room and listened to her story. She said the cleaning staff changes daily, I have never seen that guy before. Irina wanted to talk more but her shift was due hence she asked Julia to catch up later. Back at the house. Julia gets a nightmare where she was attacked by that guy in her house. She wakes up in horror when she heard a loud screaming voice from Irina's house. She went out to check but it was locked. She started banging on the door which caused others to gather around. The apartment owner had the spare key, upon Julia's insistence she opened the door. There was no one in the house except for a cat. The old lady took the cat and moved out. later neighbors complain to France about Julia's behavior. Francis apologized to Julia for working late he thought he was not giving time to his wife. This might be causing her stress. Even on next day, Irina's house was closed. Julia contacted her workplace but they also didn't know where she was. Later she saw a guy banging at Irina's door. He introduced himself as her boyfriend. Julia told him that she is not home.
she took her number from him and tried calling her phone. apparently, the phone was inside the house both heard a ringtone. But clearly, Irina was not inside. Just then Julia asked for help from this guy. she asked him to accompany her to the opposite apartment. she wanted to see that man's face that this guy agreed they both went to that apartment. On the way, she told him everything. This guy went straight to that apartment and banged the door heavily. When the door didn't open he cursed in his native language and shouted to stay the hell away from Julia. He was in a hurry hence he equally left. Julia was insistent on seeing that man hence she went to that door and banged it again. This time an old man opened the door he was terrified. Julia was also surprised this was not the man she was looking for hands she ran from there. While coming she saw the same man who was following her down the stairs. Apparently, he lived in this building. She took the lift and left.
After some time we see the same police officer again. This time that guy was with him and he had complained that Julia was harassing him and his father. The police officer convinced him about this misunderstanding and asked him to drop the charges. He made both of them shake hands. Francis was happy with this as he thought this will end Julia's stress. He showed her a news clipping on mobile apparently the police had caught the serial killer. The killer was the same guy who was sitting in that ambulance. He used to work for the victim. He had a history of crime. Later these two went to Francis's office party where they enjoyed it for a few minutes. Francis rudely jokes about Spider which made Julia furious. He said Julia was not bored at the house as she had Spider for the company. Julia took this joke to heart and walked away from there. The relationship between these two was strained for some time by this it reached its pinnacle. Julia took the train which was empty. After some time she heard an announcement as the train had stopped suddenly. Just then weber arrived there and sat opposite Julia. Naturally, she was scared. Weber says, trains usually stop like this for repair, emergency, or animals on track. He seemed off as he wanted an apology from Julia for harassing him and his father. He said he had this bad habit of watching people, nobody ever observed him. Julia was the first person who saw and waved at him. Julia immediately said sorry and left the station.
She went straight to her house and started packing. once she finished she thought about saying goodbye to Irena. Hence she went to her house, the door was not locked. she moved and started looking. To her horror and shock, she found Irina's decapitated body in her bedroom. As she tried to run someone attacked her from behind. later we see weber holding her down with a knife. He was the real serial killer Spider. He was here to finish off Julia as she almost caught him and went away. Just then both heard footsteps from Julia's house, there Francis was back. He saw Julia's bag and felt sorry. Julia instantly tried screaming but weber slit her throat. She started bleeding, she knew Irina's gun. She tried to grab it but passed out due to excessive bleeding. Francis called Irina's mobile hoping Julia might be with her. Irina's mobile was in her house and he heard its ring from his house. A little from the opposite building saw weber murdering Julia. So as he went out to finish that job, Francis saw him coming from Irina's house. He was surprised. Just then we see a slew of bullets hitting Weber, Julia fired it. She was alive, she did the act of passing out. Smart move I must say. Finally her suspicion and fear turned out to be true. Francis saw all this and he was speechless. With this, the movie ends.
Here Julia tried to fit in with the new society, language, and people. She picked on every minute detail, observed her surroundings. She got paranoid as she believed a neighbor from the opposite building is constantly watching her. while everyone around her believed that she is going crazy and fabricating a fictional world to keep herself engaged, it is only Julia who understands what’s going on around her. In obsessive pursuit, she catches a serial killer hiding in a dark apartment in Bucharest. We can speculate that after this devastating experience, Julia will probably return to America and break off her marriage, to a man who has failed to believe in her. She may not want to spend her life with Francis, who made fun of her in front of colleagues. Made Julia’s mental health an office joke. Overall it's a watchable film
