In the 50 States of Fright series, we take a look at urban legends, folktales, and horror stories from across the 50 states of America. The stories of each state are different and all its episodes are also independent. I have explained Season One has stories in the previous video. If you haven't seen it yet, do check it out. In the year 1990, an Amish mother comes to the nearby Banvel Bridge in the middle of the night with her three daughters. Including Hannah. It was an overpass bridge made for the train where we see a train coming from a distance. Suddenly Hannah's mother puts a rope noose around the necks of her two daughters and pushed them down from the same bridge. Seeing this, Hannah got scared as the next number was hers. Against her wishes, her mother puts a rope around her neck and pushes her down. Later, she also commits suicide by jumping. Here Hannah's rope was loose, which made her hang in the air. Hannah struggles to remove the rope from her neck. She falls on the rail track where the train was now in front of her. She somehow steps away from the track in a panic and survives.
Now the story starts in 2019 when Hannah, an electrical engineer, gets a call from Blake, in the middle of the night. Blake was a maintenance worker. He says there is an emergency, I know you don't do fieldwork but there are no other engineers available at the moment. You have to come here. Blake asks Hannah to bring her helmet. Hannah was a design engineer for a wind power company, she didn't do field maintenance work. She kept her helmet up in the attic which was gathering dust. Hannah was afraid of heights after her mother's suicide incident, she had acrophobia. Meaning being afraid of heights, at heights her heartbeat, and breath used to be fast, she used to hear the sound of the train. nervousness, fear, and panic attacks were common. Hannah climbs slowly on the straight and takes out her helmet.
In her car, she starts going towards the Wind Mill, the shortest way used to be through the same Banvel Bridge, which no one dared to cross at night. It was infamous for being haunted after her mom's incident. Hannah takes a detour to the Wind Mill where Blake was waiting for her. Blake says a turbine is down. it's going to take two hours for the backup team to come from Des Moines. We have in total three problems, the turbine's anemometer is not working, the wind speed reading and yaw angle are wrong. The blade alignment is wrong. If we don't stop this turbine, then it will fly. Debris will fall up to a radius of 5 km. Blake points up and says that we have to climb it soon.
So a traditional wind turbine has blades connected to a gearbox, the gearbox is connected to a generator which is internally connected to a transformer. In the back of the turbine, there is an anemometer for wind speed measurement, which is connected to the velocity sensor. This velocity sensor sends wind speed and direction to a computer program that uses it to process and change the direction of the turbine in real-time. The upper part of the wind turbine can rotate 360 degrees, as the wind changes its direction, the turbine also rotates. The turbine has to be always facing the wind to generate maximum power.
The safe wind speed of a normal wind turbine is 55 miles per hour, whenever the wind speed exceeds this, the program stops the turbine. It rotates the angle of the blades opposite to the wind direction to stop the lift. This stops the rotation and the turbine is not damaged.
In case the velocity sensor was not working, the program kept the turbine running instead of stopping it. Hannah was horrified to see the turbine, which was 300 feet tall, and had to be climbed up to reboot the program. Oil was also leaking as well. Blake now starts climbing up and tells Hannah to climb 40 feet away. He threw the rope which was in the shape of a noose. It was an anchor rope for safety. Hannah slowly starts climbing. After some time Blake asks her, when was the last time you climbed a turbine? Hannah says only in training and that too only 30 feet. I always work on the ground, installation, system integration, mechanics, etc.
Blake laughs at this and asks Hannah not to look down as she had already climbed 90 feet. Here Hannah was being hunted by a voice. Blake and Hannah rest on a resting platform at 100th feet. This time Blake sent Hannah forward, and slowly Hannah crosses 200 feet, her hand were soaring. she rests for a while as the turbines started spinning fast. The rope that Blake had tied for protection gets stuck in the socket, he now starts climbing without it.
Hannah notices that the screw on her next ladder is loose, she pulls out a wrench from her bag and uses it to tighten it. As she was putting it back in the bag, a black shadowy shape figure says the words, almost there, in her ears. She panics and drops the wrench, which lands on Blake's head. Blake falls almost 100 feet as he was without safety, his hand and legs get broken.
Hannah panics, but Blake tells her not to stop and move on. Hannah starts climbing up again and rests on the 250 feet platform. Now the whole turbine starts shaking, the wind speed was high. All the interior lights of the turbine go out, and thick pitch darkness envelops. Blake asks Hannah to turn on the lights on her helmet. As she does, the ghost figure of her mom appears in front of her and screams hello. This makes Hannah off-balance, since her safety was on she doesn't fall.
After some fear, she starts climbing. soon she sees a train-like object coming from above. She closes her eyes as soon as the train comes near her. It turned out to be an emergency lamp that was falling down. Hannah quickly climbs the remaining 50 feet to reach the generator cabin. There was a fire in the cabin due to fiction, which she extinguishes and reboots the program. As she goes to apply the emergency brakes, her mother's ghost attacks her again, using a rope around her neck. But Hannah, now strong, fights. She pulls out the rope and applies the brakes, which switch on the emergency backup lights.
Hannah stays in the same cabin until morning to program everything properly and later opens the top panel to feel the fresh air. She was now confident, the fear inside her was gone. Later on the ground, she met Blake as he was taken to the hospital.
Hannah now takes the route via the same Banvel Bridge, to confront fear. As soon as her van arrives at the bridge, her mother's ghost appears and attacks her. The van goes off balance and collides with the pillar of the bridge. Hannah was hurt but not scared. She fights with the ghost and ties the rope lying on the back seat of her van tightly around her neck. Then gave her a good kick and threw her out of the van. With this, the story ends.
So this was the story of Iowa State. Here this Banvel bridge is infamous for being haunted. According to local legend, a woman committed suicide here along with her children. No one drives on this bridge at night, as people believe that a ghost shape lady will punish them. Many people claim that they have heard the crying of a woman, the crying of children here. Locally it is also called Tera Bridge or Terror Bridge.
The next story is from Washington state where a teenage boy was telling the story. He says since childhood, we have heard stories about Old Maltby Cemetery, like everyone else, we also believed it to be fake. But after seeing what happened with Grechel Kids, my opinion also changed.
We see the three Grechel Kids who were siblings. Their names were Liam, Mallory, and Adin. These guys were walking towards the same Old Maltby Cemetery. Their family pet rat Quirky had died whom they wanted to bury there. Elder sister Mallory asks why we can't bury it near the house like most. To which Adin says I want her to go to heaven, like a mother. Here we are shown a small flashback. The child's mom Gretchel was suffering from cancer, she was taking her last breath. she wanted to meet Mallory for the last time but Mallory got scared seeing her condition. She doesn't go closer to her and her mom dies just like that.
The teenage boy says that the old cemetery is haunted since 1890. The property on which the cemetery was built belonged to a devil worshipper. All the members of the Bell family husband, wife, children, and grandparents all performed demonic rituals there. People say that it opened a portal.
Adin asks Mallory to bring flowers. The other two start digging in the graveyard, and not long after they find a closed chamber with stairs underneath. Here Mallory was clearly upset as she didn't want to be there. Mallory sees a flower in front of an old grave, and as she goes to pick it up, a lady ghost appears. She was similar to Mallory's mom in appearance. Mallory runs away seeing this, she tells her brothers to leave this place. But Adin does not agree, Mallory and Adin fight over this, and Adin's toy falls into the same chamber.
Adin loved that toy, as his mother had given him. That's why Mallory now enters the chamber to get it. These stairs and this place were haunted. As Mallory approaches the toy, the toy automatically slides down.
The place was forcing Mallory to go down, Adin and Liam call Mallory from above but Mallory does not hear anything, she starts going down. Liam now starts going downstairs to fetch Mallory when an old man appears out of nowhere, stopping the kids. Liam says his sister is in there and she needs help. The old man goes down by tying a rope tightly to his stomach. Mallory stops at a place inside the chamber where she sees the ghost in the same cancerous state. The ghost attacks her and starts slitting her throat. Soon the old man rescues her.
Once above, Mallory was in a semi-coma state. When she regains consciousness the old man had disappeared. The teenager says whether the old man was a ghost or a Guardian Angel, no one knows. He sometimes appears and sometimes does not. What Mallory saw down there was her personal hell. Many people have seen their own hell there. In the end, we see that Adin enters the chamber to collect his toy, he also saw something there. Finally, it is revealed that this teenage boy is Adin who has now gone mad. He was narrating this story to his toy in the room at his house.
So in fact many people claim that they have seen some form of hell down there. Due to this haunted story, the government sealed those steps many years ago. people are not allowed to go there.
