Today I am going to explain and recap the recently released movie called what Josiah saw. This is also like an anthology film. In the beginning, we see an old house rusted, and rugged house in a small rural town. It was better known as a haunted house, people were scared of it. In the house, we see two guys, an old man named Josiah Grahm and his son Tommy Grahm. Josiah was an alcoholic he was wasting his days on booze and telling stories to his grown-up son. Mentally Tommy was in a mess, his condition started deteriorating when he was four. Now it had progressed quite a lot. At midnight Tommy wakes up, he tries to see something through the window. We see a wooden plaque
In the town's contractor office we see two oil company executives. They were building a gas pipeline for which they needed to acquire Grahm's house. Money was no issue hence they were ready to offer handsome compensation. The Contractor gives them a little history of that house. Josiah's wife Miriam was a saintly lady. She was regular to church with her twins and Tommy. One Sunday she was absent, people found her hanging by the tree. Her husband Josiah was her karma, he tortured her, and abused her. Town people believe her ghost still roams around that house. Asking people to demolish that house is a tough sell. The contactor here demanded double money. Tommy was at a local market to purchase booze, he saw a kid whom he recognized. He tried to talk with him but the kid didn't respond. At home, after a few drinks, Josiah rudely and angrily, shouts at Tommy, He says stop looking for your mom at night. She's gone, these town folks are fools. There is no ghost. This night while sleeping Josiah got a horrible vision, he saw something. The next morning while standing beside the same tree he says to Tommy. I saw your mom, she is in hell fire, she needs salvation. We have to pay for our sins, we have to cleanse ourselves. We need to repent our sins. Josiah explains what needed to be done. Tommy agreed, he threw away all booze, cleaned the house, and started living saintly like his mom.
In the next story, we see Tommy's elder brother Eli who was living in a trailer in another town. He ran from the house with his twin sister Mary years ago yet the memories were haunting him. He had no money, many criminal records, and was in jail for a couple of years for abusing a teenage girl. Hence when a little girl went missing from the town the police suspected Eli. He pleads he knows nothing but the officer was not fully convinced. He says I have an eye on you. Eli was in deep trouble financially. He had borrowed money from a local gangster Boon and was in no position to return it. Boon offered and ordered him a bargain deal where Eli has to march with his henchmen to a local Gypsy camp. Gypsy people were carrying a huge amount of gold with them and Boon wanted to loot it. Eli was a little scared as Gypsy were hard-core criminals, looting them is like entering a lion's den. But he had no option, debt is a bitch.
Eli and two men enter the Gypsy camp under the garb of business. Gypsy's had some fare illegal business with Boon where they owned money. At the camp, a lady named Gina started chit-chatting with Eli. She explained her culture and business to him. Later she took him to one old lady named Mama Luna who was an occult fortune teller. Mama Luna got a few visions when she grabbed Eli's hand. She says your past is dark, you are running from it. It is haunting you and soon it will consume you. Your death is near. Eli doesn't take this seriously and Gian offers him a special tea. Mama Luna with her ability understood why Eli is here. She quickly warns her men about this and they kill Boon's men. Eli was unconscious here as Gina gave him a drug mixed tea. When he gained consciousness he saw a guy guarding him and a little girl who was missing. Gypsies had kidnapped her. Eli smartly tricks this guard here with some drugs he was carrying, he then beats up another guy and escapes with that little girl. Gypsies tried catching him, they shot at him yet Eli escaped.
He hands over the gold and girl to Boon hoping he will hand over the girl to her parents with the help of the local sheriff. Boon had a good repo with the local sheriff as the sheriff was on Boon's parol. Boon was impressed with this, he offers a piece of gold to Eli but Eli declines it. He believed it to be a cursed one as Gypsies were neck-deep in occult staff. Eli's assumption turned right soon as Boon died here on spot, probably of a heart attack. With no option available Eli himself took the girl to the police station. When he returned home he found a letter from the oil company saying they want to purchase his old house. For that, they need signs from all three that is Eli, Mary, and Tommy. Eli was happy, he thought he hit a jackpot. He quickly packed his back and left for his sister Mary.
The third story is about Mary who was living with her husband. She had a sterilization procedure on her when she was young. Now after 20 years she was desperate for motherly love. She and her husband were trying for adoption. We see Mary under counseling and pleading for her case. She was also mentally tormented, she used to get suicidal visions. Mary was unhappy and a little shocked to see Eli at her house. These two had a difficult relationship and a haunting past. Eli without wasting a point asked Mary to sign papers as clearly he needed money. Mary agreed as she wanted to get rid of that house for a long time. She decides to visit it with Eli. These two stayed in a motel for a night and then reached their house. Tommy welcomed them as he knew they would come.
All three were happy seeing each other after many years. Eli was surprised how come Tommy is here. last he checked he was living with his wife and kid. Here we come to know the real reason why Mary and Eli were here. Years ago they had buried something in the courtyard of this house. They were here to dig it up and shift it. They would have been in trouble if the oil company found it while digging. Josiah and Tommy were looking at these two through a window. Josiah says these two are the reason why your mom is in hellfire. They must own their sins. Eli starts digging. He was shocked to see that what they buried years ago is missing. Mary saw a few letters from Tommy's wife and was surprised.
At night all sit at the dining table and start talking. Tommy says what Josiah saw and levels allegations. He says our mom died because of you two. you two had an affair, Mary had a baby which died early. You still are in an affair. You slept together in that motel before coming here. We have to live right else mom will never get out of hell. Eli was surprised at Tommy's ignorance, he thought he knew. Eli says that baby is not mine it was dads. That old bastard used to abuse Mary, he used to beat us up. When you were four he pressed your ear with a hot iron. When mom saw this she committed suicide. All three of us together killed dad one day and buried him. Here we see some flashbacks where Eli kills Josiah.
Josiah was dead yet Tommy was seeing him. Josiah screamed lie hearing this and said these two are lying, it was their baby. They killed the baby. Eli and Mary were surprised as seeing Tommy talking in the air. That's right there were not seeing Josiah, only Tommy was seeing him. Eli now understood why Tommy was here. His wife left him a year ago and remarried. Tommy was still after her and the kid hence he got many warning letters from his wife's attorney.
Mary started crying seeing Tommy like this as clearly, he needed help. She thought he is hallucinating. Just then she saw the box which she and Eli buried years ago in Tommy's room. Upon checking it, it had the remains of Josiah. Tommy had dug it up on Josiah's order. Josiah was a ghost, he was taking revenge. Tommy here attacks Eli with an ax and kills him. Later he chased Mary and stabbed her. Finally, he sat down at the dinner table where it seemed Josiah killed him. We see the tree getting burned. It had a new plaque. Eli and Mary Grahm's sins were paid in full. In the end, we see a motel scene where Eli and Mary were intimate. Indeed they had an affair and had sinned together. With this, the film ends. So who is lying and who is telling the truth? It is left to interpretation so let's interpret.
First Mary and Eli had an affair since childhood. Eli may be the real father but he blamed it on Josiah as he was abusive as well. When their mom Mirium learned this she committed suicide. Believing Mary as she too blamed Josiah. After their mother's death, these kids killed their abusive father and ran away from the house. In reality, all sinned together. They paid the price for their sins partially throughout their life. Mary suffered from PTSD, Eli was broke and Tommy went insane. Mary and Eli’s sins were paid in full when they faced up to the truth and died at the hands of Tommy. It can also be assumed that Miriam’s sin of committing suicide was paid in full when her children's sins came to light. This means her soul has now been saved and rescued from the hellfire. As for Josiah, his soul is dammed for life. This film is basically about trauma, sins, and their cascading effect. The film is pretty long, the initial 30 mins make you boring. Average film one-time watch only.
